Agar-What it is

Agar is a kind of perfume, generally used by the Arabs. Agar wood, when burnt, emits fragrance. Agar develops in Agar tree which resembles a black berry tree. It attains a height of 50 to 60 feet, on a girth of 9 to 1O feet. It flowers every year and bears seeds. Agar tress grows from seeds.

Agar wood is used mainly as substance of fragrance by the Arabs. When burnt, the Agar wood emits fragrance and it is for this purpose that the Arab burns them in their houses during religious festivals and other important occasion.

Besides being used as perfume, Agar attar (Agar oil) is also used as an ingredient in the preparation of stimulants. It serves as a purgative and as an anti-dot to gout. Agar oil also used by the Unaini Chikitsha Shastra (Herbal Medicine Manufacturer) as an ingredient ol various diseases.
